The relatively easy to maintain Bucephalandra sordidula comes from the island of Borneo and tolerates soft to hard water. It is also falsely commercially available as Bucephalandra sp. 'Melawi', 'Titan' or 'Bukit Kelam / Sintang'. The epiphyte, which develops to a height of 5 to 7 cm, comes into its own on roots or stones in the aquarium. It mainly occurs in flood areas and therefore copes very well with currents. Due to its creeping and branched rhizomes, it tends to form dense mats and can grow both submerged and immersed and is therefore also suitable for terrariums and paludariums if sprayed daily.
Bucephalandra sordidula, which grows well with a good supply of nutrients and additional CO2 fertilisation, forms a creeping rhizome and elongated, narrow and wavy leaves. Young leaflets form red to copper undersides, while the undersides of the leaves shimmer silver and have a brown-red central rib. The flowers formed can be pink, but may differ, which means that the different forms of Bucephalandra sordidula can be assigned.
You can keep Bucephalandra sordidula in soft to hard water. It grows well in medium-strong light, but it also copes well with less light.
Bucephalandra is best tied up and not planted because the rhizome in the bottom of the aquarium can rot away. It is best to present the Bucephalandra bound or glued to aquarium decorations, especially on roots or pieces of rock. You can multiply Bucephalandra sordidula quite well by dividing the rhizome. Each piece must have at least 2-3 leaves.
Our expert Oliver Knott recommends:
With the Aquarebell Short Scissors you can cut the rhizome cleanly and smoothly without damaging it.
