Hobby Zeolite is an algae-inhibiting filter substrate that is suitable for use in external filters in fresh and saltwater aquariums.

Zeolite is solid natural stone with many pores, cavities and channels. Zeolite has an adsorbing effect and electrostatically attracts and holds environmental toxins and putrefactive products. Zeolite promotes rapid bacterial colonisation, inhibits algae growth and serves as an ion exchanger and catalyst. Zeolite can be used loose or in a mesh bag in the external filter or in the filter tank of fresh and saltwater aquariums. 1kg zeolite works in 500-litre aquariums with medium fish stock for about 3 months.

The 5-8 mm hobby zeolite is over 80% pure Clinop zeolite. Of the approximately 30 different types of zeolite, this has the strongest effect due to its special crystal structure. The purity and preparation of the hobby zeolite result in particular in the ion exchange sequence. This is why hobby zeolite binds ammonium, even if there are also useful substances such as potassium and sodium ions, as is the case with seawater. The pore size of 4 angstroms (4 millionths of a millimetre) is also very ideal to bind the ammonium ion by electrostatic attraction. Hobby zeolite contains no silica and can be used in seawater without hesitation. Filter materials cannot be compared with one another without taking into account the different mode of action. Zeolite promotes a rapid culture of denitrifying bacteria that fix and break down organic breakdown products from plants or fish excrement. Certainly, there are filter materials that provide special bacteria with an even more settable surface. But zeolite mainly acts as a catalyst and ion exchanger. It absorbs environmental toxins and putrefactive products, binds phosphate and above all ammonium and inhibits algae growth.
