The easy-to-care-for pennywort Hydrocotyle verticillata is native to North America, South America and Africa. The aquarium plant likes soft to medium-hard water. The 3 to 15 cm high ground cover plant really comes into its own in the foreground or middle ground of the aquarium. Suitable for cold water pools.
The whorled pennywort Hydrocotyle verticillata grows crawling. While the shoots can become quite long, the mushroom-like, round green leaves of this pennywort only protrude 3 to 15 cm in height. The stem base is centrally located in the middle of the leaf. This creeper is ideal for creating a jungle layout in the aquarium or for loosening up in the foreground.
Hydrocotyle verticillata reproduces via subsides. Its long, prostrate stems form roots at the nodes. You simply cut off the runners with scissors and set them again.
Hydrocotyle verticillata grows well in soft to moderately hard water. CO2 makes sense because the plant then grows much nicer. A good supply of nutrients and, in particular, a good supply of iron is also helpful so that the cap mushroom plant stays beautiful for a long time. The Hydrocotyle verticillata stays nice and compact under intense light.
Our expert Oliver Knott recommends:
The unusually shaped whorled pennywort Hydrocotyle verticillata allows you to bring beautiful shapes into the aquarium or aquascape. Its unusual growth shape is a great eye-catcher.
