Organic nitrogenous substances in the water, such as fish droppings and leftover food, are broken down in various stages, namely to harmful ammonia (NH3), to toxic nitrite and finally to nitrate (the nitrogen cycle). A total ammonia content (NH3/NH4+) of more than 0.25mg/L is already harmful to your fish in the long term.
