Description

The less demanding stem plant Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis', the Thai water friend, comes from Southeast Asia. The 40 to 60 cm high plant is perfect for the background of the aquarium and tolerates soft to hard water.

The Thai water friend Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis', which is very popular with aquarium hobbyists, is a classic from Southeast Asia. You can use the fast-growing stem plant optimally for combating algae because it is undemanding and uses up many nutrients that are no longer available to the annoying algae.

This robust, beautiful to look at aquarium plant becomes quite tall and can, therefore, be placed in the background in the aquarium. It branches out nicely with regular pruning and then becomes bushy and more compact.

The large, wide, light green leaves of the Thai water friend just look beautiful when combined with water plants with finer foliage. If Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis' receives a lot of light and is well-fertilised in the aquarium, the shoot tips take on a pretty bronze colour.

The Thai water friend grows even without CO2 fertilisation, with CO2 it goes faster and the plants appear stronger. A good supply of nutrients promotes growth, and under medium to strong light the colours become prettier and the growth more compact.

To reproduce Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis', cut off the tips of the shoots approx. 10 cm long and insert them two to three centimetres deep into the substrate of your aquarium as cuttings.

You can also get it here in our online shop as an XL version. This is especially useful if you don't have time to wait until the aquarium has grown in.

Our expert Oliver Knott recommends:
Aquariums that have not been around for a long time and in which the plants have not yet grown so well are particularly susceptible to algae. Here I recommend using undemanding, fast-growing stem plants in the run-in phase, which steal the nutrients directly from the algae so that they do not come up in the first place. The Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis' is definitely one of the plants that I can recommend for this.
