Description

The JBL Oodinol Plus 250 is a cure for the velvet disease in aquarium fish and is sufficient for 250 litres of aquarium water after repeated use (treatment time approx. 15 days).

JBL Oodinol Plus is a medication to combat the velvet disease caused by skin cloudiness in the oodinum group (Piscioodinum pillularis in fresh water, Amyloodinum ocealltum in saltwater), Cryptocarion, Chilodonella, Ihthyobodo (Costia) and others in ornamental fish in fresh and saltwater. A visible sign of a disease is a velvety coating on the skin, which can be yellowish, whitish, grey or brownish, or barely visible small dots that are much smaller than those of Ichthyophthirius. If the gills are severely affected, a greatly increased respiratory rate can be observed and the gills are spread apart. The following non-specific symptoms can also be observed when the parasites and other parasites are attacked: chafing on objects and the substrate, sticking of fins, refusal to feed, reduced mobility, apathy, darkening.

Parasites
The velvet disease is a parasite from the group of dinoflagellates (a kind of algae). This makes it clear that the best way to combat oodinum successfully is with copper. The copper concentration in the water is decisive for the success of the treatment. Exactly 0.3 mg / l copper is necessary and must be checked with a suitable copper test. Too much copper can also kill fish, too little of it has no effect and may even lead to resistance. Like Ichthyophtirius, Oodinum has a life cycle in which the pathogen passes through several stages. As with white spot disease, the Oodinum pathogen can only be fought in the swarm stage. It is therefore advisable to raise the water temperature by 3 ° C, to a maximum of 30 ° C. This speeds up the life cycle and increases the chance of fighting the parasite in the vulnerable swarm phase. Invertebrates and invertebrates should be excluded from treatment. Many types of catfish can react sensitively to the increase in the copper content.

Application
Before and during use, activated carbon must be removed from the filter, UV-C water clarifier, CO2 fertilisation, and additional skimmers and ozonisers in saltwater must be switched off. A 50% water change must be carried out before use. During treatment, the aquarium is to be aerated with a vent stone using a diaphragm pump. JBL Oodinum Plus should always be added in the morning while observing the animals.

Dosing

  • Day 1: 10 ml per 100 litres of water.
  • Day 2: Check the copper content with a copper test. For values below 0.05 mg / l copper: add 10 ml to 100 liters. For values between 0.1 and 0.15 mg / l copper: add 5 ml to 100 litres of water.
  • 3rd and 5th day: same as day 2.
  • Day 10: the treatment is complete.

At the end of the treatment, a water change of at least 70% must be carried out, whereby the substrate must be cleaned thoroughly with a gravel washer. In very soft freshwater with a carbonate hardness below 4 ° dKH, only 75% of the stated dose should be used.

A detailed treatment plan is included with the product. The fish should not be fed for 3 days after the start of treatment. Reduced feeding can be started on the 4th day. Biologically active filters that have been in place for some time can partially inactivate the drug. Since JBL Oodinol massively damages the filter bacteria, a very thorough filter cleaning is recommended after the treatment, but even better a replacement of the complete filter media and the use of bacterial preparations is recommended. After treatment, the aquarium water should be filtered over activated carbon for 24 hours to remove drug residues. The ammonium/ammonia and nitrite values should be measured daily during and after treatment. The active ingredient causes water colouring, which disappears after a short time.

Warning
Since copper tends to be deposited, the effective concentration of 0.3 mg / l copper should be monitored daily with a copper test and additional doses should be made if necessary. Each dose of JBL Oodinol Plus increases the copper content of 100 l aquarium water by 0.3 mg / l. Due to the deposition properties of copper, the separate treatment of the fish in question in a quarantine tank is recommended in order to effectively prevent uncontrolled copper accumulation in the main aquarium, which could later lead to dangers.

Tip
Since some oodinum pathogens in freshwater also have photosynthetic pigments, darkening the aquarium for 3-4 days can support the success of the treatment.
